It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Marjory Anne Harper, 82, of Topanga, CA (formerly of Cambridge, MA) on February 22, 2020 following a long struggle with cancer. Marjory, who was known as "Parj" to her family, was born in Madison, WI on July 22, 1937 to Marjory ("Marj") Westerdale Harper and Herbert ("Hap") Harper. After the death of her father in 1941, Parj lived with her maternal grandmother, Gram Westerdale, an important influence on her life who encouraged her curious spirit. A 1955 graduate of the Northfield School for Girls, Parj became the 4th generation of women in her family to attend Oberlin College, graduating in 1959. She earned a Master of Education from Lesley College in 1975 and a Master of Science in architecture from University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1989. An architect, therapist, artist, traveler, perpetual student, and profound and caring teacher who for years worked with incarcerated high school boys, gang-affiliated youth, and other children most in need, Parj left a lasting impact on the world. Her commitment to her students can only be matched by her love of family.
This remarkable woman will be deeply missed by many surviving family and friends including Linda Johnston Jacobs, Jim Westerdale, Mim Day Westerdale, Tom Westerdale, John Wood, Lisa Wood and her beloved dog Eloise. She was preceded in death by her loving cousins Sue Johnston Fitch, Jeff Westerdale and Tim Westerdale. In her memory, consider doing a rain dance when droughts appear, reading a good book, or finding and bringing joy to those around you. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. If you wish to be notified when the celebration is planned, please send your contact information to email@example.com. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Marjory Harper's name to Pet Orphans of Southern California (http://petorphans.org), the shelter from which Parj adopted the dog that brought her so much joy.
