Johanna (Jo) Toomey

March 24, 1955 - January 10, 2020

On Friday, January 10, 2020, Johanna (Jo) Toomey passed away at the age of 64. She was surrounded by many loved ones in her final days, most notably Ed and Mary Long.

Jo was born to the late Charles and Helena Long on March 24, 1955. During her early childhood, she discovered two of her lifelong passions - horses (Faith Ranch) and The Beatles. She attended St. Augustine Academy, where she made many long-lasting friendships and later graduated from Youngstown State University.

She was a devoted sister to Ed and Mary Long and loving and supportive mother to Sarah (Toomey) and Brian Janus, Ryan and Liz Brady-Toomey and Colin and Elaine Toomey. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren (Quinn, Joshua, Aiden, Giuliana, Kensington, Nicolas and Connor), whom she loved deeply.

Jo was a beyond talented and well-known addiction counselor and she touched the lives of countless adults, adolescents and families through her work. Helping individuals find sobriety and learn to live, laugh and love again was her true calling and one of her greatest joys. Her friendships were numerous, but she held a few very close to her heart, including high school friends Maggie (Green) Day and Patrick Murphy, dear family friends and neighbors Nick and Mary Xeros and adulthood friends Miriam Robinson, Thom and Shelia Walter and Joan O'Donoghue.

While Jo's family grieves her loss tremendously, they are choosing to remember her in a way that honors her joyful spirit, love for laughter and desire for a good time. On Tuesday, January 14, a memorial mass will be held at 11:00am at her childhood parish of St. Coleman (2027 W 65th St, Cleveland, OH, 44102) and a Celebration of Life gathering from 4:00pm-8:00pm at LaCentre Banquet Facility (25777 Detroit Rd, Westlake, OH, 44145). This will also be followed by a larger outdoor celebration this Spring/Summer.

If desired, flowers can sent to St. Coleman (2027 W 65th St, Cleveland, OH, 44102) for the memorial mass or a donation made in her honor to the Hospice of Western Reserve.

Jo was the best therapist I've ever had. She helped me with depression, suicidal ideation, self harm, the loss of my grandmother, and through my first relationship. The news of her passing crushed me and I feel for the family. To her, I wish I could thank her for all the help she provided, and for being a role model for my future career in psychology. Thank you Jo so much for everything. You will forever be the voice in my head when I deal with any problems.
