Gary Behrendt, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 2nd at Kendal on Hudson in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Gary was born in Berlin, Germany on November 29, 1923. In 1936, at the age of 12, Gary and his family fled Nazi Germany for the United States, settling in Great Neck, NY. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, NY and obtained his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. While studying at Wharton he met his future wife, Ann, who was an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania.
After graduate school he went to work at Sonocraft Corporation, a leading supplier of sound reproduction and recording equipment for professional, industrial, educational and home use, and eventually became its president. Following his retirement, he kept active, volunteering for many years with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) as well with as other community organizations.
Throughout his life his two favorite hobbies and passions were golf and bridge.... particularly excelling at bridge. Gary and Ann were active members of North Shore Country Club in Glen Head, Long Island for over 50 years.
Gary most enjoyed spending time with family. He was not only dedicated and devoted to his immediate family, but also to his extended family. He will always be loved and remembered for his kindness, generosity, and charm. He had a knack for making people feel welcome, and those whose lives he has touched will treasure his memory.
