Catherin K Preece

November 22, 1938 - March 3, 2020

Catherin K Preece, 81, of Vienna, VA, passed away peacefully on March 3rd, 2020 at the Adler Center in Aldie, Virginia surrounded by love and family.

She was born on November 22,1938 in Ithaca, New York. She graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, class of 1956. She went on to study Secondary Education at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. It was there that her lifelong love of teaching others began.

Catherin (Kay) loved being a teacher and loved educating second through fifth graders. After 35 years of teaching in North Carolina and Virginia, she retired from Fairfax County Public Schools in 1995. She continued teaching children by tutoring half of the children in Vienna in her "schoolroom" across the street from Flint Hill Elementary. She also helped teach the English as a second language classes for many years at Vienna Presbyterian Church. These were pastimes that she did for years and something she enjoyed immensely.

She enjoyed traveling and seeing exciting new places with friends and family. She had a huge group of friends and was one of those people you could always count on in a pinch. She loved playing games, especially Rummikub, and having a good laugh. For years she enjoyed working on ceramics with her mother and daughter and later spent many hours enjoying scrapbooking and morning walks with her friends.

She was the matriarch of our family and was always considering the needs of others. She was a staple at all events and was always there to help or have fun! Her home was often frequented by her grandchildren's friends and you would often hear the greeting of "Hey Bammom" as they came and went.

Catherin participated in many activities at her home of worship, Vienna Presbyterian church. She attended circle groups and went on numerous group trips. She faithfully replenished the children's bulletin kits at the church every week for over 25 years.

Catherin is survived by her daughter Beth Williams of Vienna, VA and her grandchildren Shannon Williams, Cory Williams, and Samantha Williams. She has two great grandsons, Connor Williams and Augustus "Gus" Williams whom she absolutely adored. She is also survived by her siblings James Kenerson of Columbia, South Carolina, Charles Kenerson and Nancy Malone who reside in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was also very much loved by her many nieces and nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by both her parents Elizabeth Sparger Kenerson and Vertner Kenerson, her ex-husbands, Richard Fabian and Nigel Preece and her son-in-law, Eric Williams.

A Memorial Service and reception is scheduled for March 20th at 1:30 at Vienna Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow at the Great Hall.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to the Capital Caring Adler Center where she received wonderful care in her final days.

She will be deeply and greatly missed just as she was deeply and greatly loved.

I just posted on Facebook that I remember my 5th grade teacher Ms. Preece and much to my dismay a fellow friend commented that she had passed away last month. Ms. Preece was one of my favorite teachers at Flint Hill Elementary when I was a child. I loved going to her farm and swimming in her pool. She was one of the most patient and sweetest teachers ever. I'm so glad she had such a full and prosperous life doing what she loved to do. I am forever grateful for all that she did to enrich my life and others.
