One of the most common obstacles to writing a touching obituary tribute is figuring out how and what to write. According to a recent study, 72% of people want an obituary when they die. But when tragedy strikes and funeral plans need to be made, the writing of the obituary may fall by the wayside. A loved one's life story should never be forgotten, which is why Beyond the Dash made a free Interactive Obituary Template for generating an obituary within minutes.
Introducing the Interactive Obituary Template
The first draft can be the most difficult part of writing—even for professional writers. The Interactive Obituary Template is a tool that you can use to create that first draft quickly. Once the draft is complete, you can edit, add final touches and incorporate details of their life story, before publishing the story for others to read.
We've made it really easy for you to craft an obituary or death notice at the touch of a button. Check out this video, How to Write an Obituary Using an Interactive Obituary Template:
For those new to using the Interactive Obituary Template, here's what you need to know to get started:
There are nine sections to complete in the template, but that doesn't mean you have to complete them all. If some sections don't apply to the life of your loved one, leave those boxes unchecked. Fill in the sections you can with all the relevant information—the more detail, the better!
As you enter your loved one's information in the fields provided, you will see the life story generating at the bottom of the page in real time.
Once all the information has been entered, click the Copy Obituary to Clipboard button. Paste the story into another document, Note or into the story field on Beyond the Dash, if you plan on publishing the story online for free. There, you can edit the story for grammar, spelling, accuracy and completeness.
Publish the story online for free, or submit the story to a newspaper to be printed.
The story you generate using the template is not saved while you are completing the fields. Don't navigate away from the page, use the back button, close or refresh the page while using the template—or you may lose your work.
Don't worry about typos until you are in the editing stage. The capitalization, punctuation and spacing you enter in the fields may impact the way the obituary looks initially. Re-reading and editing your work in another document (or on Beyond the Dash) will ensure that the end result is polished and presentable.
Don't be afraid to add your own memories, anecdotes and information to the final, edited story. The Interactive Obituary Template is a resource to help you get traction on your first draft, but the sections included are by no means an exhaustive list of what information to include in an obituary. The more you put into an obituary, the more meaningful it will be to you, your loved ones and others reading the life story.
If you are struggling to write a tribute to someone who has passed, don't hesitate to use all the tools and resources you need to get the job done. Even if the death occurred months or years ago, your loved one deserves a written tribute that will last forever.
